CHAPTER SIX

THERE was no mistaking the sound of that car engine; it purred down the drive like a great lazy lion, expending not a fraction of its power. Maddy, hard at work on the table decorations for a wedding reception that afternoon, glanced up in time to see the sleek silver shape of Leo’s Aston Martin glide past the window of the old morning-room in the east wing, towards the wide carriage-sweep at the front of the house.

She hadn’t known that he was coming back today—he hadn’t bothered to let her know. But then he hadn’t bothered to tell her he was going away either; she hadn’t seen him after the funeral, and it had been almost a week before Julia had mentioned in passing that he was in Australia on business.

The past six weeks had been the busiest of her life. Between getting the unused rooms in the east wing into a useable state—she had even done some of the decorating herself, and made the curtains—she had had to spend time with the bank manager and arrange insurance cover, as well as negotiate with the licensee of the village pub to cover her for serving alcohol on the premises until she had time to apply to the magistrates for a licence of her own. And, on top of that, she had had an advertising leaflet printed, and bought new tablecloths—while continuing to meet the commitments she had already made for organising parties and arranging to sell the house in Manchester and move herself and Jamie lock, stock and barrel to Hadley Park.

What was Leo going to think of her progress? He had seemed to accept her ideas when she had first told him about them, but she had suspected even then that he hadn’t taken her seriously—he had made it quite plain that he thought she was just dabbling, that what she was really after was another meal-ticket. Well, she was about to prove him wrong—and he wasn’t the kind of man who liked to be proved wrong.

It hadn’t been easy to stop herself thinking about him over these past six weeks. Some of the things he had said…Had he really wanted her from the beginning? A small shiver of heat ran through her every time she let herself dwell on the memory of the rare times they had met; though he still had his own rooms, on the second floor of the west wing, he had been abroad almost all the time she had been married to Jeremy, except for a few brief visits home.

The first time he had appeared she had been heavily pregnant—she hadn’t been expecting him then, either—and when he had walked into the orangery where she was repotting a bougainvillaea she had been so startled that she had dropped the plant, shattering the pot and spilling compost all over the cool tiled floor. Stooping awkwardly to pick up the pieces under his cold gaze, she had been all fingers and thumbs, until he had told her in a peremptory tone to leave it and let him do it.
